Choosing the right court surface for your needs

Over the past 40 years, synthetic playing surfaces have taken over from the old high maintenance type courts of natural grass and loose granular products. The choices of synthetic surface available mean that you can pick according to the advantages and disadvantages of each product.

Take time to consider the standard of your play. Do you want a surface that is extremely hard-wearing with little maintenance. Or are you looking for the best possible playing surface? Will you be just playing tennis or would you like to use the area for any one of number of sports such as five-a-side football, cricket, roller-blading, netball or basketball?

Make sure you understand the pro and cons of each surface, their relative costs and how closely they match your needs and plans for the future. For example, have a look at the surfaces listed on our site and you will how each surface has distinct characteristics.

When comparing different products don't be content to merely examine small samples. Remember you don't play on 'mock ups' or samples. Ask your contractor to show well played-in courts of three or more years old. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Take your racquet and shoes and have a hit. You wouldn’t dream of buying a car without taking it out and trying it. Any good contractor will be happy to arrange to how you courts they have built and will arrange for you to play on them and compare the surfaces available.
